Advanced Sessions

Wednesdays from 6pm to 8pm. These sessions are invitation only for first-claim riders who are actively competing, progressing from Saturdays.

Wednesday sessions are challenging right from the warm-up and teach riders advanced techniques and develop fitness and stamina. Wednesday sessions are often targeted at specific skills, for example sprint sessions or Madison racing. Riders should be taking part in other regular cycling activity in order to develop their all round fitness.

If you want to spend more time on the track to help with these advanced training sessions and to you can look to attend the more advanced sessions run by the National Cycling Centre.

Wednesdays are shared between sprint and endurance, you might also want to think about whether you want to concentrate on sprint or endurance events. Sprinters and endurance riders have different skills and strengths and weaknesses and the events they take part in are very different. Fundamentally, sprint races generally cover only 4 or 5 laps with the first few slow to moderate and the last flat out so their skills are high-power short bursts. Examples of their races are Match Sprints and Keirins.

Endurance riders do the longer events such as Scratch and Points, they often cover 50 or 60 laps (1 lap is 250m) so their strengths lie in longer and steady efforts though often with more intense efforts during points races. You can bob between the two types but will generally settle on one or the other.

If you want to spend more time on the track there are several sessions you can attend run by the National Cycling Centre, all you need is a Better account and some level of accreditation. There is Level 1 which will be easy for you to pass after one or two Intermediate sessions, with Level 1 you can attend the Regular Riders sessions. There are more advanced sessions that require a higher evel of accreditation, ESV can help getting you accrediated.
